Chemical Peel

After receiving a chemical peel it’s important to follow these instructions to ensure you receive optimal results and to minimize any potential side effects:

Be gentle to the treated area. Protect your skin from direct sunlight by wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it generously and reapply every 2 hours, especially if you are spending time outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat is an excellent way to protect your face.

Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and anything that may cause excessive sweating for the first few days after the peel. Sweating can cause water blisters to form on the skin. If this happens, DO NOT pick at them. Just let them heal on their own, typically they cause no issues unless they are popped or picked at.

It is normal to experience some redness, swelling, flaking, and peeling in the days following the treatment. Use gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and other products recommended by your provider to keep the skin hydrated and promote healing. Keep your body hydrated and your skin moisturized. When washing your face use cool or tepid water and your fingertips, avoid using washcloths and excessive rubbing.

While the skin is exfoliating avoid pulling, picking, peeling, or rubbing the treated area as this can cause scarring, irritation or hyperpigmentation. If necessary, you can use some cuticle scissors to trim the loose skin.

Some people do not experience any visible shedding, flaking, or peeling. This is also normal. Many factors affect the skin’s response, and the level of visible peeling is not indicative of the results you will get from the peel. Changes are still happening under the surface of the skin.
